Rear Adm. Linnea Sommer-Weddington, a native of southern California and raised in northern New Jersey, graduated from Slippery Rock State College, Pennsylvania, prior to enlisting in the Navy's Delayed Entry Program in 1981. Completing basic Russian language training in 1983, she reported to Naval Security Group Activity, Misawa Air Base, Japan, for duty in direct support (shore-based) to national cryptologic operations.
She earned a Master’s in Business Administration in 1996 from Meredith College, Raleigh, North Carolina.
Leaving active service in 1986, she pursued a reserve direct commission and returned to duty in 1989 as an ensign - Special Duty Officer (Cryptology), United States Naval Reserve. Initial billets included administrative officer, training officer, special security officer, department head, and executive officer in the Naval Reserve Security Group (NRSG) units in Greensboro, North Carolina, and Fort Meade, Maryland. Other assignments included NRSG information assurance monitoring mission coordinator and assignment with Office of Naval Intelligence overseeing the declassification team.
She completed a three-year active duty recall in 2002 as deputy chief of staff-cryptology for Commander, Naval Air Reserve Force. Following, she reported for duty with NRSG San Diego as operations and later executive officer. Command tours between 2005-2013 included: Navy Reserves Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) North Island in San Diego, California; Fort Worth and San Antonio, Texas; and Augusta, Georgia. Additionally, she completed the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College Joint Professional Military Education.
Mobilized in 2012 for one year supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, she was the U.S. Forces-Afghanistan director of information operations co-located with International Security Assistance Forces Headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan. Between December 2013 and September 2014, she was commander, Information Dominance Corps Region Southwest, San Diego, California. October 2014 through February 2017, she was deputy director of Warfare Integration (N2N6) staff. In March 2017, she assumed duties as deputy director, command, control communications and computer systems (C4) and information technology (IT) for U.S. Strategic Command.
Personal decorations include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal and other personal, unit and campaign awards.
Sommer-Weddington is the longtime business manager for a family fine art business.
