Commanders activate Cyber wing

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Gen. C. Robert Kehler, commander of Air Force Space Command, and Maj. Gen. Richard Webber, commander of 24th Air Force, activated the Air Force's first combat communications wing in a ceremony held at Robins Air Force Base, Ga. , Oct. 5.

The 689th Combat Communications Wing, commanded by Col. Theresa Giorlando, specializes in conducting tactical operations in austere, deployed, and joint/coalition environments. The wing's mission is to train, deploy and deliver expeditionary and specialized communications, air traffic control and landing systems for Humanitarian Relief Operations and dominant combat operations, anytime, anywhere.

The 689th CCW, nationwide, will consist of approximately 6,000 active duty, Air Force Reserve, and Air Force National Guard personnel, as well as civilian and contractor support from the 3rd Combat Communications Group, 5th Combat Communications Group, ten Air National Guard Combat Communications units and four Air Force Reserve Combat Communications Squadrons.

Colonel Giorlando's assumption of command was held in conjunction with the wing activation ceremony.
