SECDEF recommends General Cartwright as next Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. - Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates announced today that he has recommended Gen. James E. Cartwright for appointment as the next Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

General Cartwright is currently serving as the commander of U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. Cartwright has served in his current position since July 2004.

"We are a nation at war and it is my duty and honor to serve the men and women of the armed forces of this great country," said Gen. James Cartwright, commander, U.S. Strategic Command. "I am honored to be recommended by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to serve as the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.   My focus remains on my responsibilities as Commander, USSTRATCOM, as we continue the missions assigned to our U.S. strategic forces. "
