Four USSTRATCOM units win prestigious awards

Air Force News Service

Four units of U.S. Strategic Command have been selected to receive the Omaha Trophy for 2008 in their respective categories. The trophy is presented annually to USSTRATCOM units demonstrating the highest performance standards.

Selection for each of the four award categories is based on formal evaluations, meritorious achievement, safety and other factors such as community involvement and humanitarian actions.

The 2008 Omaha Trophy winners are:
  • Global Operations Trophy -- Joint Space Operations Center, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.
  • Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Trophy -- 341st Space Wing, Malmstrom AFB, Mont.
  • Strategic Aircraft Operations Trophy -- Strategic Communication Wing ONE, Tinker AFB, Okla.
  • Submarine Ballistic Missile Trophy -- USS MARYLAND (SSBN 738), Naval Base Kings Bay, Ga.
"Each year, the United States Strategic Command and the Strategic Command Consultation Committee present the Omaha Trophy to the men and women who demonstrate the "best of best," supporting the command's lines of operation day in and day out," said General Kevin P. Chilton, U.S. Strategic Command commander. "The Omaha Trophy is a prestigious award recognizing outstanding accomplishments of warfighters conducting strategic deterrence, space and cyberspace missions every day, providing global security for America. It also demonstrates the unique and close partnership we have with our Omaha community, their ongoing support and recognition of excellence in our Servicemembers. "

The Strategic Air Command Consultation Committee first presented the Omaha Trophy as a single trophy to the Strategic Air Command in 1971 on behalf of the citizens of Omaha. The number of awards increased over the years as the U.S. Strategic Command's missions and organizational structure changed. Today, Omaha's Strategic Command Consultation Committee recognizes four outstanding units. These categories reflect the command's primary lines of operations and continued emphasis on strategic deterrence and its evolving role in global operations.

USSTRATCOM is one of ten U.S. unified commands under the Department of Defense. The command, including components, employs more than 2,700 people representing all four services including DOD civilians and contractors who oversee the command's operationally focused global strategic mission.
