U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Charles Richard (center right), deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), and U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Patrick McMahon (center left), USSTRATCOM senior enlisted leader, speak to sailors aboard USS Alaska (SSBN 732) during a visit to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., Aug. 3, 2017. While there, Richard and McMahon presented the 2016 Omaha Trophy, ballistic missile submarine category, to leaders and crew members of USS Alaska in recognition of their contributions to strategic deterrence. The Omaha Trophy, which dates back to the U.S. Air Force's Strategic Air Command, was originally created by the Strategic Command Consultation Committee in 1971. At the time, a single trophy was presented the organization’s best wing. The tradition later evolved to five awards that recognize USSTRATCOM’s premier intercontinental ballistic missile wing, ballistic missile submarine, strategic bomber wing, global operations (space/cyberspace) unit and strategic aircraft wing.
