Joint Functional Component Command for Space (JFCC-Space)
Lieutenant General Susan J. Helms
Joint Functional Component Command for Space (JFCC Space) headquarters is located at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Established in July 2006, JFCC Space is a component of U.S. Strategic Command and is responsible for executing continuous, integrated space operations to deliver theater and global effects in support of national and combatant commander objectives. JFCC Space coordinates space operational-level planning, integration, and coordination to ensure unity of effort in support of military and national security operations, and support to civil authorities.
JFCC Space is comprised of three operations centers in addition to the headquarters staff. The Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC), also located at Vandenberg Air Force Base, provides operational employment of worldwide joint space forces and enables the JFCC Space commander to integrate space power into global military operations. The Joint Navigation Warfare Center (JNWC), located at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque N.M. , enables space-based positioning, navigation, and timing superiority for the Department of Defense and interagency coalition partners. The Missile Warning Center (MWC), located at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado Springs, Colo. , coordinates, plans, and executes world-wide missile, nuclear detonation and space re-entry event detection to provide timely, accurate and unambiguous strategic warning in support of the United States and Canada. The Unified Command Plan (UCP), updated in 2008, assigned USSTRATCOM the responsibility for "planning and conducting space operations (force enhancement, space support, and on-orbit operations) and as directed, planning and executing space control and force application. " The Commander, USSTRATCOM (CDRUSSTRATCOM), established JFCC Space in July 2006, to optimize planning, execution, and force management of the assigned missions and to coordinate space operations. CDRUSSTRATCOM designated the Commander, Fourteenth Air Force, as Commander, JFCC Space (CDR JFCC Space). The CDR JFCC Space conducts space operations, exercises Operational Control (OPCON) of designated space and missile warning forces on behalf of CDRUSSTRATCOM, and submits prioritized space operational requirements to CDRUSSTRATCOM. CDR JFCC Space is also designated as the Global Space Coordinating Authority (GSCA).
CDR JFCC Space serves as the single point of contact for military space operational matters to plan, task, direct, assess, and execute space operations. JFCC Space conducts space operational-level planning, integration, and coordination with other USSTRATCOM joint functional components, other combatant commanders through their space coordinating authority (SCA), and other Department of Defense (DoD) partners, and when directed, non-DoD partners to ensure unity of effort in support of military operations, national security operations, and support to civil authorities.
JFCC Space is authorized 240 billets.
JFCC Space is funded through USSTRATCOM and operates as a branch of USSTRATCOM.
