Smidt began his career as an airborne infantryman before serving 10 years in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Green Beret. In addition, he completed various assignments in operational law and military justice; he also served as the staff judge advocate for the 1st Infantry Division and as a professor of international and operational law at the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s School prior to his assignment to USSTRATCOM.
