Offutt AFB, Neb. - Gen. Kevin P. Chilton, commander, U.S. Strategic Command, recently announced the four 2009 Omaha Trophy winners, an honor awarded annually to military units demonstrating the highest performance standards in USSTRATCOM mission areas. The winners are:
Selection for each of the four award categories is based on formal evaluations, meritorious achievement, safety, and other factors such as community involvement and humanitarian actions.
“The Omaha Trophy is a prestigious award recognizing outstanding accomplishments of war fighters conducting strategic deterrence, space and cyberspace missions every day, providing global security for America,” said Chilton. "Each year, the United States Strategic Command and the Strategic Command Consultation Committee present the Omaha Trophy to the men and women who demonstrate the ‘best of the best. ’ The trophy also represents the ongoing support we have from our Omaha community. ”
Today, Omaha’s Strategic Command Consultation Committee recognizes four outstanding units. These categories reflect the command's primary lines of operations and continued emphasis on strategic deterrence and its evolving role in global operations. The Strategic Air Command (SAC) Consultation Committee first presented the Omaha Trophy as a single trophy to the Strategic Air Command in 1971 on behalf of the citizens of Omaha. The number of awards increased over the years as the U.S. Strategic Command's missions and organizational structure changed.
