OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb - Major General Abraham J. Turner, Chief of Staff, United States Strategic Command, talks with children at the Offutt Community Center who are participating in the Drug Education For Youth program. More than 25 children ages 9-12 are participating in the eight day phase one event of the two phase program. Phase two DEFY events will include monthly activities and mentoring throughout the school year. The DEFY program at Offutt is staffed by volunteers from the United States Strategic Command, Strategic Communications Wing One Detachment Offutt (Navy), Defense Intelligence Agency and the 55th Force Support Squadron (Air Force). DEFY originated in 1993 as a drug demand reduction program geared towards substance abuse awareness and life skills for Navy and Marine Corps dependent youths aged 9-12. The program has expanded to 56 Navy and Marine Corps sites world-wide, and is partnered with the Department of Air Force which also has sites world-wide and the Department of Justice, which has sites in the United States.
