OMAHA, Neb. (May 26, 2014) Lt. Gen. James Kowalski, deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), is accompanied by Nebraska Congressman Lee Terry and Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman as he lays a wreath following a speech at Memorial Park in Omaha during the Heroes of the Heartland Foundation Memorial Day ceremony. In his speech, Kowalski emphasized the importance of national stewardship. "When our hearts ache knowing the cost of a free nation, maybe then we will cherish that nation and embrace our responsibility for wise stewardship," he said. USSTRATCOM is one of nine DoD unified combatant commands and is charged with space operations, information operations, missile defense, global command and control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, global strike, strategic deterrence and combating weapons of mass destruction.
