WALLOPS FLIGHT FACILITY, Va. (Feb. 24, 2015) Three short-range ballistic missile targets are launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility as part of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Flight Test Other (FTX)-19. FTX-19 assessed the ability of Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Carney (DDG 64) USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) and USS Barry (DDG 52) to acquire and track the targets, then conduct guided-missile engagements using the Distributed Weighted Engagement Scheme (DWES). DWES coordinates multiple ships and determines the preferred "shooter," which reduces duplication of ballistic missile defense (BMD) engagements while ensuring BMD coverage. MDA will use the test results to improve and enhance the European BMD system, which provides protection for deployed U.S. forces and European allies and partners.
