U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney (right), U.S. Strategic Command commander, and other command members monitor, from Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile test launch at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., May 20, 2015. The launch supports USSTRATCOM's strategic deterrence mission by obtaining reliability, accuracy and performance factors for use by the USSTRATCOM commander and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Air Force Global Strike Command, a USSTRATCOM service component, routinely conducts Minuteman III launch tests to verify the accuracy and reliability of the ICBM weapon system. These system tests provide valuable data to ensure a safe, secure and effective nuclear deterrent. The ICBM community, including the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, and USSTRATCOM will use the data collected from this mission for force development. The ICBM test launch program demonstrates the operational credibility of the Minuteman III and ensures the United States' ability to maintain a strong, credible nuclear deterrent as a key element of U.S. national security and the security of U.S. allies and partners.
