LA VISTA, Neb. (July 29, 2015) The Honorable Frank Miller, a keynote speaker and 31-year public servant, challenged those gathered at the sixth annual U.S. Strategic Command Deterrence Symposium by saying, "once upon a time we were as a nation very sophisticated in our thinking in this area. I fear, however, in the 25 years between the fall of the Berlin wall and the breakup of the USSR, that since that time we have collectively grown sloppy in our thinking, in our analysis, in our approach to nuclear deterrence, and I hope that you will correct some of that over the next day." During the two-day symposium, held in La Vista, Neb., academic, government, military, international experts, representatives and senior leaders from USSTRATCOM explored a broad range of deterrence-related issues. USSTRATCOM is one of nine DoD unified combatant commands and is charged with strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
