U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney (left), U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) commander, speaks to U.S. Navy Capt. (Ret.) Max Duncan during the Naval Submarine League's (NSL) 33rd annual symposium in Falls Church, Va., Oct. 22, 2015. Duncan, a World War II veteran, conducted patrols aboard the USS Barb (SSN 569), a Thresher/Permit-class submarine. "The Barb and her crew sunk more enemy tonnage than any other submarine during the war, disrupted Japanese shipping routes, and was the first submarine to fire a ballistic missile at an adversarial target during the war," Haney said in his keynote speech. Haney also stressed the importance of strategic deterrence and the role of ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) in providing the nation with a safe, secure, effective and ready nuclear deterrent before thanking Duncan and all veterans for their sacrifice and dedicated service to the nation. The Naval Submarine League is a professional organization for submariners and submarine advocates whose primary mission is to promote awareness of the importance of submarines to U.S. national security. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions, assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
