U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Allen W. Batschelet (right), U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) chief of staff, poses for a photo with Dr. Ellen Pirro and Mr. Jason Johnson, from Iowa State University, during their visit to USSTRATCOM Headquarters, Oct. 22, 2015. While here, Dr. Pirro and Mr. Johnson engaged in discussions with USSTRATCOM leaders on their research investigating the potential roles of artificial intelligence in protecting cyberspace networks. This interaction supports the USSTRATCOM Deterrence and Assurance Academic Alliance, which consists of USSTRATCOM and 19 local and national universities, including ISU. "The collaborative relationships with academic institutions enable USSTRATCOM to leverage expertise and develop future generations of leaders that are able to make the difficult decisions necessary to provide a safe, secure, effective and ready strategic deterrent for the U.S. and its partners and allies," said U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney, USSTRATCOM commander. The alliance is part of the command’s ongoing effort to build and maintain enduring relationships with partner organizations from the private sector, academia and allied nations to address challenges in the strategic operating environment. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions, assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
