U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Patrick F. McMahon, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) senior enlisted leader, passes the noncommissioned officer sword to the sword bearer during a Change of Responsibility Ceremony at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., May 13, 2016. During the ceremony, U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Patrick Z. Alston, former USSTRATCOM senior enlisted leader, relinquished his duties to U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney, USSTRATCOM commander, who then officially appointed McMahon to USSTRATCOM’s highest enlisted position. The sword, which serves as a display of leadership, integrity and responsibility, was passed from the sword bearer to Alston, who passed it to Haney, who passed it to McMahon as a symbol of the transfer of authority from the outgoing to the incoming senior enlisted leader. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions, assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
