In his remarks, Roberts, who served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy from 2009-2013, explained the role of nuclear weapons in strategic deterrence, global stability and international conflict strategy. He also answered questions from members of the audience. Hosting Roberts is part of a USSTRATCOM academic outreach initiative and supports the command’s ongoing effort to build, support and sustain relationships with deterrence experts from government agencies, academia and international institutions. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions, assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
