U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Stephen W. Wilson, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) deputy commander (center), poses for a photo with submariners assigned to the USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) during their visit to USSTRATCOM Headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., June 21, 2016. U.S. Navy Lt. Brian Baehler, the assistant operations officer (third from left), said the biggest takeaway from his time here was the opportunity to "see the other end of the spectrum…Where our orders come from, where our messages come from and why we’re out there on the submarine [supporting] strategic deterrence." While here, the crew met with senior leaders in the command, received a mission briefing and toured USSTRATCOM’s global operations center. "The purpose of the visit is to tour the facility [and see how it] relates to our mission on the [ballistic missile] submarines," said U.S. Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Travis Brown, chief of the boat (right). "I’ve never been to a combatant command facility before; it’s been very impressive." The USS Nebraska - commissioned July 10, 1993 - is an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) based at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, Wash. The SSBN fleet is the most survivable leg of the nation's nuclear triad and supports USSTRATCOM's mission to deter strategic attacks and defend the nation as directed. The U.S. Navy personnel pictured with Wilson, left to right, are: Seaman Caulin Dutt, Petty Officer 2nd Class Shane Chatham, Baehler, Petty Officer 2nd Class Cameron Zimmerly, Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Short and Brown. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions, assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
