U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) commander, provides remarks during the 2016 Strategic Deterrent Coalition Symposium in Albuquerque, N.M., June 21, 2016. During the symposium, Haney and other leaders from the DoD and international organizations discussed the importance of maintaining a safe, secure, effective and ready nuclear deterrence force, as well as the need for modernization. "Strategic deterrence is a complex subject that is foundational to our nation’s defense," said Haney. According to the SDC’s website, "community-based organizations across our nation have come together to create the Strategic Deterrent Coalition in the belief America must avoid the tendency to understate the complexity of the specialized equipment, facilities, personnel, knowledge and expertise required to properly sustain American's Nuclear Deterrent." One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions, assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
