U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney (left), U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) commander, and U.S. Army Lt. Gen. David L. Mann, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command commander, attend the 2016 Space and Missile Defense (SMD) Symposium in Huntsville, Ala., Aug. 16, 2016. During his remarks at the event, Haney discussed a wide range of topics, including the need for increased funding for more space and missile defense research and development, the Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center’s role in deterrence and the importance of partnerships in missile defense. The SMD Symposium is a professional development and networking event that enables leaders and professionals from U.S. and international organizations to collaborate on space and missile defense issues. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
