A member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the CNO is the principal naval adviser to the president and to the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) on the conduct of war, and is the principal adviser and naval executive to the SECNAV on the conduct of activities of the Department of the Navy. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
