Veterans Day was originally referred to as “Armistice Day” because it was celebrated on the same date that World War I hostilities ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. On June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name to Veterans Day, celebrated on Nov. 11 each year, a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
