U.S. Air Force Gen. John E. Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), presents the Purple Heart Medal to U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Benjamin L. Clark received the Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in combat, Apr. 10, 2009, while serving in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.  Originally introduced as the “Badge of Military Merit” by Gen. George Washington, commander in chief of the Continental Army in 1782, the Purple Heart is the nation’s oldest military award.  It honors service members who have sacrificed their lives or well-being in service to the country.  One of nine Department of Defense unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan that include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; and analysis and targeting.
