OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE - U.S. Air Force Gen. John E. Hyten (right), commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), greets Dr. Ernest Moniz (center), former U.S. Secretary of Energy, and former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, co-chairman and chief executive officer of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), during their visit to USSTRATCOM headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., March 14, 2017. Moniz and Nunn visited USSTRATCOM to hold discussions on topics of mutual interest related to the nuclear enterprise. As Secretary of Energy, Moniz was tasked with implementing the president’s energy strategy and maintaining the nation’s nuclear deterrent. In addition to his work with NTI – a non-profit organization focused on preventing catastrophic nuclear, cyber, biological, radiological and chemical attacks – Nunn serves as a distinguished professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech University and as chairman emeritus of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan that include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; and analysis and targeting.
