U.S. Air Force Gen. John E. Hyten (right), commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), speaks with Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) and University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) leaders at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., March 30, 2017. During the FFRDC and UARC conference, leaders participated in roundtable discussions on projects and capabilities of their respective organizations and topics related to USSTRATCOM’s missions and priorities. The conference marks the second time the command hosted leaders from FFRDCs and UARCs simultaneously – the first such event occurred in September 2016. Both FFRDCs and UARCs are not-for-profit entities sponsored and primarily funded by the U.S. government to address technical needs that cannot be met as effectively by existing government or contractor resources. One of nine Department of Defense unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan that include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; and analysis and targeting.
