USSTRATCOM deputy commander tours USS Alaska
U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Charles Richard (right), deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM),speaks to U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Kevin Friesmuth during a tour of USS Alaska (SSBN 732) at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., Aug. 3, 2017. While there, Richard presented the 2016 Omaha Trophy, ballistic missile submarine category, to leaders and crew members of the USS Alaska in recognition of their contributions to strategic deterrence. The Omaha Trophy, which dates back to the U.S. Air Force's Strategic Air Command, was originally created by the Strategic Command Consultation Committee in 1971. At the time, a single trophy was presented the organization’s best wing. The tradition later evolved to five awards that recognize USSTRATCOM’s premier intercontinental ballistic missile wing, ballistic missile submarine, strategic bomber wing, global operations (space/cyberspace) unit and strategic aircraft wing.
