U.S. Navy Vice Adm. William Merz, deputy chief of naval operations for warfare systems (OPNAV N9), conducts a Joint Maritime Fight brief to United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) personnel in the STRAT theater at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., April 12, 2019. Merz was in the area as the guest speaker at the Heartland of America 119th Submarine Birthday Ball in downtown Omaha, Neb.  The ball pays tribute to the men and women serving the submarine force, their families and all of those who came before them to take on the arduous task of undersea warfare that began when John Holland sold the submersible that would be commissioned USS Holland (SS-1) to the U.S. Navy, April 11, 1900.
