Lt. Gen. Michael Lutton is the Deputy Commander, United States Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
He is the deputy commander for one of 11 Unified Commands under the Department of War. USSTRATCOM is responsible for strategic deterrence, nuclear operations, global strike, nuclear command, control, and communications enterprise operations, joint electromagnetic spectrum operations, and missile threat assessment. USSTRATCOM is comprised of more than 40,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians, and civilians who operate globally performing the command’s missions. The command provides the President and Secretary of War a range of options to deter adversaries, assure allies, and prevail in strategic conflict.
Lt. Gen. Lutton is a career space and missile officer. He is a graduate of the United States Weapons School and has served as a weapons officer instructor, weapons squadron operations officer and weapons squadron commander. He commanded the United States Air Force’s only group providing initial training for the nation’s space and intercontinental ballistic missile operations and air launched cruise missile maintenance forces. Lt. Gen. Lutton commanded the 91st Missile Wing, Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota. He served as the Deputy Director for Nuclear and Homeland Defense Operations, the Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia. Lt. Gen. Lutton commanded the Twentieth Air Force, Air Force Global Strike Command, Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming.
Prior to his current assignment, Lt. Gen Lutton served as the Deputy Commander, Air Force Global Strike Command and Deputy Commander, Air Forces Strategic-Air, U.S. Strategic Command, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.
