OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. - Gen. John Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), meets with Dr. James Anderson, assistant secretary of defense for strategy, plans and capabilities, during his visit to Offutt Air Force, Neb., March 11, 2019. During his visit, Anderson met with senior leaders; received briefs on implementation efforts, including nuclear command, control and communications (NC3) systems; and visited operations centers where he spoke with service members carrying out the deterrence mission. After his visit to USSTRATCOM, Anderson will spend several days visiting units responsible for executing various components of the USSTRATCOM mission. Anderson is responsible for advising the Secretary of Defense and the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy on national security and defense strategy; the forces and contingency plans necessary to implement defense strategy; nuclear deterrence and missile defense policy; and security cooperation plans and policies. He ensures that the department’s program, budget, and posture decisions support and advance senior Department of Defense leaders’ strategic direction.
